Read Alley's Story below...
I had always been an active person, tramping, swimming, gym, snowboarding and growing up on a farm, and so being fit is important to me.
10 years ago I injured my knees after training as an aerobics instructor and wearing the wrong footwear for me. I couldn't even sit at a computer with my knees bent without it hurting! I saw a podiatrist and was told I had Patella Femoral Rotation (a fancy word for twisted hips and knees) and all the specialists said that I would never be able to run injury free and comfortably. I would only ever be able to do low-impact activities; swimming and cycling.
My family have all been runners and active so I naturally was gutted. I had to take a year off high impact activities to fully recover from my knee injury and have extensive physiotherapy. I lost my motivation for fitness and became quite lazy and unfit! I always had dreams of completing events and tried a couple of triathlons with my mum and sisters with great disappointment because it hurt and I struggled.
I was about to give in and believe that I could never be an active person again. but I thought I would give it another go and started running. I increased my running distance too fast and wasn't sensible about my training and ended up with stress fractures in both my shins.
Another trip to the podiatrist... sent to a sports specialist for xrays, scans and physio yet again. This time my podiatrist sent me to Shoe Clinic with my new orthotics and was fitted with the correct shoes for me! I then tried running again with a sensible rehabilitation programme and training plan and not to forget determination.
I have since ran 4 half marathons and now training for a marathon in December. I am injury free with the help of the Shoe Clinic, my podiatrist and physio. It goes to show... anything is possible!
